Paper making reached Europe via Arab traders as mentioned in an earlier section, and block printing on paper and cloth had been in use in Europe too, as in China and India, but the invention of movable types and their spread to Europe took about another 400 years.
It is traditionally understood that Johannes Gutenberg, of Mainz, Germany, developed European movable type printing technology in about 1439. The high quality and low price of Gutenberg's Bible set the European age of Printing in motion in just over a decade.
Gutenberg's printing press spread across Europe and led up to the Renaissance and then spread all over the world. The Gutenberg's Printing Press is considered as the most important invention of the second millennium.
